Hi Susan
Hi Susan
A couple of quick questions, which I will pose on the blog, in the event others, might find your answers helpful.
Publishers are inclined to request manuscripts in serif fonts like Courier, Times New Roman, or Georgia, but serifs tend to blur on computer screens.
I have noticed, during my trek into “The Land of Submissions,” that many agents, publishers, and websites, prefer sans serif fonts like Verdana, as they are easier to read on computer screens.
If I am not mistaken, The Coffee Shop Author judges are scattered, and will receive the manuscripts via email.
Are serif fonts still preferred, or can I submit in my favorite, Verdana. Does it even matter, as one can change the font with a click of the mouse in an Office Document?
The second question, regards when we must submit our manuscripts.
The wording, both on the home page, and in administration’s blog/email, is that we must submit on April 30th, rather than on or before, April 30th.
I confess I am a bit concerned, as I prefer to submit a day or two early in case there is a glitch and I must resend.
I understand that many will want to write and revise up until the last possible moment, but I did enter the contest on the day it began, on September 30th, 2010, and we are talking about 20 pages. (19 for me ☺.)
Is it acceptable to submit a day or two early, and will we receive a reply that it has been received?
I do want to say to you, and the sponsors, how much fun this has been, and what a great learning experience.
I decided to write short stories, and have pushed my personal boundaries, including writing creative non-fiction, which I had never before tried. I played with POV, tense, and genre, and as I did last year, put my stories out for all in the coffee shop to read.
It’s been great. Thank-you so much.

Fonts and judges
jaw,
12-pt Times New Roman is the standard for any submissions I've ever seen. It's easy to change fonts after you finish writing - just click on "Select All" and change to Times New Roman 12-pt.
Yes, our judges need to share these files, plus we wish everyone to save paper and the expense and time of mailing your entries.
Please, please, please do not send in your entries until April 30th! I am going to be attending a library conference that weekend, and will not be able to check my email and respond until late on the evening of the 30th. While the emails also go to Randal's attention, I would like to acknowledge receipt of these myself.
I'm happy that you have enjoyed the contest. We've enjoyed sponsoring it!
Susan
Thanks
Thanks for the confirmations. If fact, I had already converted my submission to Times New Roman. In Verdana, 12 point, my submission would have been 23 pages. ☺
I’ve been using Verdana four years now and find it much easier on the eyes. Recently, I discovered that it was created to read on a computer screen.
Many websites now use Verdana, Ariel, and other sans serif fonts, for that reason.
